The Desert Museum

History of the Huguenots and Camisards in the Cévennes

In the heart of a Cévennes hamlet and its typical streets, in the birthplace of the Camisard chef Rolland, through authentic pieces and documents, the Musée du Désert brings to life the Huguenot past and the history of the Camisards.

Through about twenty rooms, you will be able to discover:

  • The period of the “Desert” (1685-1787) from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes to the Edict of Toleration.
  • The War of the Camisards.
  • Repression and resistance.
  • Daily life in hiding.
  • The long march towards freedom of conscience until the revolution.
